The History of Sedona

Sedona is visited by over 3 million tourists each year! The attractions are endless — the stunning red rock landscapes surrounding Sedona entice outdoor adventurers of all kinds, luxury spa resorts lure wellness travelers, foodies have a fine selection of restaurants and wineries, and national monuments of timeless beauty give evidence of times gone by. According to archaeological evidence, the story of Sedona's first settlers dates back over 10,000 years with ancient tales ranging from cliff dwellers to cowboys.

Most of the ancient pueblos were built along the banks of the Verde River and creeks to provide fertile soil for farming and wildlife for survival. By 1300 AD, the only evidence of the Sinagua tribe was the petroglyph and pictograph rock art etched in the red rock cave walls. Why they disappeared so suddenly to this day remains a mystery. Soon after, the Yavapai, Apache, Hopi, and Navajo tribes realized the rich local resources and settled happily in the Verde Valley, until the arrival of the European settlers.

Sedona and the Verde Valley are still scattered with some of the oldest and best preserved cliff dwellings in the Southwest. Visit Montezuma Castle in Camp Verde, one of the oldest cliff dwellings, constructed by the Sinaguans around 1100 AD. Set high in a 150-foot limestone cliff, the complex consists of a five-story building with a collection of 20 rooms used to house families.

In 1876, John James Thompson became the first permanent American settler in Sedona, claiming a parcel of land in Oak Creek Canyon under the 1862 Homestead Act. This parcel of land was situated across what is today one of Sedona's favorite breakfast spots, the Indian Gardens Market and Cafe. At the same time, John Lee and Henry Schuerman settled along the lower banks of Oak Creek in an area today known as Red Rock State Park.

In 1879, the Abraham James family settled just south of Indian Gardens. J.J. Thompson married their daughter Margaret, and together they settled in the Camp Garden community, later named Sedona. Historic records indicate that Abraham James named Sedona's Bell Rock, Steamboat Rock, Courthouse Rock, and Church Rock (later renamed Cathedral Rock). By the early 1900s, two dozen families were raising cattle and horses in the area, planting crops along the creek, and before long establishing orchards.

The red rock scenery of Sedona has provided a stunning backdrop for over 100 feature films, productions, and commercials over the years. The movie-making era began in 1923 when Zane Grey's novel "Call of the Canyon" was adapted into a silent film in Sedona. In 1945, John Wayne produced and starred in "Angel and the Bad Man," and from thereon, Sedona became Hollywood's hottest movie set for classics such as "Broken Arrow," "3:10 to Yuma," "Easy Rider," and "Midnight Run" starring Robert De Niro.

Today, Sedona is a thriving hub for artists and creatives, and many of the streets are named after movies including Broken Arrow, Copper Canyon, Fabulous Texan, Gun Fury, Johnny Guitar, Last Wagon, Pony Soldier, and Station West.

Sedona is a destination that captures your heart in any season, but spring is extra special with Sedona in bloom! The high desert landscapes erupt with striking cacti and colorful wildflowers, wildlife sightings are abundant, and you can get outdoors in nature, without the summer heat.

Spring is characterized by warm temperatures with average highs in the low 80s and cooler 50-degree temps in the early mornings and evenings – perfect for outdoor exploration, cozy fireside chats, and the relaxation, restoration, and warm hospitality that is synonymous with Sedona. Spring is one of the best times to visit the charming town of Sedona.

Off-roading is a wonderful way to explore the desert landscapes and red rock scenery of Sedona. If you're comfortable tackling the big steep climbs, gnarly descents, and rugged terrain of Sedona's 4WD roads alone, ATV rentals are readily available in town – or book an off-road Sedona jeep tour with a local guide geared to show you the best of Sedona's iconic red rock landscapes.

The wild and scenic Verde River flows for 190+ miles through Central Arizona and is the ultimate high desert oasis for outdoor recreation. Plan a family tubing adventure on the flatwater, a wild whitewater rafting on the rapids, or combine two Verde Valley attractions on the world-famous Water to Wine Tour from Alcantara Vineyards.

Sedona has a rich and fascinating history with archaeological evidence of human history dating back 10,000 years. From the ancient pueblos of the first Native American settlers to Sedona's iconic movie-making era, the cultural history of Sedona is still evident around town today. Explore the well-preserved Native American heritage sights, stroll the streets of film stars, or take a self-guided tour on Sedona's Walk Through Time.

The south rim of the Grand Canyon is only 2-hours from Sedona! In springtime, the canyon flowers and cacti are in beautiful bloom, baby wildlife breathe life into the desert landscapes, and the heat and crowds of summer have not yet arrived. Take a guided Grand Canyon tour from Sedona, or pack up the kids and take a road trip on Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive (SR 89A) to Flagstaff and onto the splendor of the Grand Canyon.

Situated 7 miles north of Sedona, Slide Rock is recognized as one of “America’s Top 10 Swimming Holes” and Sedona’s most popular summer attraction! From the parking, follow the path down to the bridge where you’re welcomed by the contrasting colors of the red rocks and a half-mile-long swimming hole with endless options for a summer dip. Slide Rock has red rock ledges to set up your sunbathing spot for the day, shallow waters for wading, deep swimming sections, and an 80-foot-long natural sandstone slide ranging from 2-4 feet wide, dropping swimmers straight into the natural pools along Oak Creek.

Scenic is an understatement, and fun is a given! A short walk from the parking lot on the Allen’s Bend Trail, you’ll find red rock terraces for sunbathing, tall cliffs with natural ledges for jumping, deep clear pools for floating and swimming, and isolated swimming holes away from the crowds. Nestled below Cathedral Rock, one of Sedona’s most iconic natural monuments, Red Rock Crossing at Buddha Beach is one of the most breathtaking areas in Sedona. Whether you’re seeking to beat the heat with a dip, set up a picnic with a perfect backdrop, soak in the vibes of the Red Rock Crossing vortex, or photograph Sedona’s most stunning sunset, Red Rock Crossing is a must-do during your stay in Sedona.

Red Rock Crossing can be accessed on an easy creekside walk from the Crescent Moon Picnic Site with picnic areas, BBQ grills and restroom facilities available. Alternatively, the Baldwin Trail and Cathedral Rock Trail connect to the Templeton Trail for a short, easy hike to Buddha Beach. Here, you can truly pick your beach vibe! Buddha Beach has sun-drenched, red rock beaches, hidden coves, and deep pools for swimming and rock jumping. The water is warmer than Grasshopper Point and Slide Rock in the north, there are a few dog friendly pools to swim with your pooch, and the views of Cathedral Rock are simply spectacular.

If you’re up for an adventure, The Crack at Wet Beaver Creek is one of Sedona’s most pristine and secluded natural swimming holes, accessible only on a 3.5 mile bucket-list hike on the exposed Bell Trail with little shade, but big rewards (bring lots of water!). Nestled in the heart of the Wet Beaver Wilderness, only 10 miles from the Village of Oak Creek, The Crack is an amazing swimming hole framed by craggy red rock cliffs for jumping with a natural stone diving board (known locally as “the tongue of the beaver”), and serene surroundings. There are two forks along the trail, keep left at both. Shortly after the second fork, you’ll reach The Crack at Wet Beaver Creek. Dogs allowed!
